The Buccheri La Ferla is a 400 beds hospital sited on the sea-side just at the entrance of Palermo. Since its opening the hospital carryed on a social and cultural activity, as it is placed in one of the most popular and ancient areas in Palermo, named "Brancaccio". The anesthetic department has been playing an important role from both the cultural and clinical point of view. A good standard has been achieved. Obstetric analgesia in labour is free delivered and epidural analgesia is performed in more than 1000 pregnant women a year.An outpatient pain clinic for the treatment of chronic pain is also offered. A global informatic system has been developed to manage the anesthesiological activity. All the operating rooms have a work station and are connected by a local network. Data from the preoperative visits performed in the wards are entered in a portable PC and afterwhat charged on the central system. Monitoring of patients and their trends are connected to the work station through a serial port. The whole anesthesiological activity can be displayed on line from any work station and , by a modem, at distance. So far data from more than 23000 patients are stored in this computerized system.
